You can definitely feel that Halloween is in the air. The students are so excited!  With the hope of channeling some of this excitement, we brainstormed and made a list of Halloween words.  While using this list as a reference, the students began to write a rough draft of their own Halloween story. These stories should be ready for publication sometime next week.

The students took the Unit 1 benchmark test in reading this week.  I hope you saw it.  I was pleased with the results.  I also tested them on spelling the high frequency words we’ve had so far.  They should know these words by heart, not only by reading the word, but also by spelling it.  Keep practicing at home.

In math we are in the midst of Chapter 3 and learning how to construct a bar model to help arrive at the difference in a subtraction problem.  Students are learning how to turn an addition equation into a subtraction one by looking for the biggest number in the equation and placing it before the minus sign. They should continue to practice the doubles facts to help them add or subtract without using their fingers.

Essie was our superstar student of the week.  Each day we waited with anticipation for her to show us her special treasures from home.  Her favorite color is pink and she would like everyone to recycle and reuse items in order to make the world a better place to live in.  Next week,Teresa will be our superstar student.

Mrs. Fodera surprised us as our first Mystery Reader of the year.  She read a special book,The Day You Were Born, in honor of Vittoria’s birthday. Thank you for visiting us.  The students love listening to others read to them.

We will have our class Halloween party on Thursday afternoon.  Melissa and Renee have arranged for some parents to send in treats for our party. I also heard that Renee has an arts and craft activity planned for the students.  Remember, it is a free casual day. Students may wear black/orange/Halloween t-shirts.

We will attend the 9:00 Mass on Friday as we celebrate the holyday, All Saints Day.  Students should dress in Class A uniforms.  The second graders will be dressing up as their favorite saints.

Have a great weekend.  Let’s hope that Ms. Loraine’s foot feels better!
