First Grade News

What a busy week we’ve had! It seems we are busier than ever as we head into our final five weeks of the year. I really enjoyed all the treats for Teacher Appreciation Week, especially the breakfast and lunches that were organized by our room parents. It is a gift each day to spend time with your children as we grow in faith and knowledge together.
We’ve learned about 12 states and capitals so far. Only 38 more to go! The students love singing the states’ song. My goal is to finish all states by the last Tuesday of the school year, no pressure, though.
We’ve finished Story 5 in Unit 5 of our reading program. We have one unit left! This should bring us into the last week of school, no pressure, though. This week we focused on the diphthong of oy, oi. We also know how to break apart syllables when a word ends with “le”.
I hope your child has been practicing his/her poem. It needs to be memorized and have a prop to accompany it for the Poets’ Tea
The students completed Chapter 11 in math and most have a good sense of how to tell time to the hour and half hour, as well as elapsed time.
The first graders will be leading a decade of the rosary over the intercom next Thursday and Friday. Students have been leading a decade of the rosary as part of our morning prayer throughout the year, so they are very familiar with it.
Our Poets’ Tea invitations will be going out next week. It’s just been so busy this week, we didn’t have time to make them yet. You may invite whomever you wish. It will be held on Thursday, May 22nd, at 12:45 in the schoolyard. If it rains, we will have it in the church hall. We will be doing a lot of practicing in the next couple of weeks.
Chloe’s grandmother, Dorrie Stapleton, surprised us as our Mystery Reader this week. She read a story about plants and gave each student a plant which they can care for and be surprised at what kind of flower appears. Thank you, Nana!
Our May Procession is on Wednesday. Class A uniforms should be worn. All students should bring a flower which will be presented to Mary.
Don’t forget to let me know if you want a yearbook by Tuesday! Just send an email and I’ll add you to the list. The $20 will be deducted from FACTS.
First Graders will take the MAPS tests on Thursday and Friday next week. Please make sure students eat a nourishing breakfast and get a good night’s sleep.
In planning ahead, the first graders will wear orange T shirts for field day. I would like the students to be able to sign each other’s shirt, so please make sure they have one that you wouldn’t mind being written on. They can be purchased at Michael’s.
Thank you so much for all my birthday wishes as well as the flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and generous gift certificate to Alo. I can’t wait to shop when things slow down a bit.
Enjoy this Mother’s Day weekend. I have learned lots about you, moms! Try not to laugh too hard as you read about yourselves.
